Minister meets multiple retailers
Monday, 18 June 2007Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Michelle Gildernew MP MLA, today met with representatives of two of the leading multiple food retailers.
During her visit to London the Minister took the opportunity to raise a number of issues that are concerning the local agri-food industry saying: “It is important that the multiple retailers are made aware of the impact of their relentless efforts to buy ever cheaper food. While it is important to ensure food is affordable, it is crucial that those producing that food receive a return that sustains their business and too often this is not the case.”
In her meetings with Justin King and James Laws of Sainsburys, and Steve Murrells of Tesco the Minister highlighted the pressure being experienced by local producers and processors and discussed how, with the help of DARD, a more sustainable supply chain could be developed.
The Minister said: “I am pleased that these retailers are committed to sourcing a significant amount of their business from local companies and developing their supplier base. We have a tremendously resilient industry and one that I feel can continue to flourish given the right opportunities. My meetings today have initiated discussions about future opportunities for local producers and explored ways that my department can assist.”
