22 June 2009 - Appointments to Sea Fish Industry Authority (Seafish) Board

Paul W Kerr has been appointed as the new Independent member on the Board of the Sea Fish Industry Authority (Seafish) representing the north of Ireland.

The appointment is from the 15 June 2009 and will be for a period of three years.

Seafish is a Non-Departmental Public Body, jointly sponsored by the Fisheries Administrations in England, the north of Ireland, Scotland and Wales which works across all sectors of the British seafood industry. Its role is to raise standards within the industry, encourage, the consumption of seafood, improve efficiency and assist the industry to develop in a sustainable way.

Members are paid £9,593 a year for 1.5 days work per month. The deputy chair receives £21,033 for 2-3 days work per month.

1. The Sea Fish Industry Authority (Seafish) is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) sponsored by the four UK government fisheries departments and funded by a levy on seafood. It was established in 1981 and works across all sectors of the seafood industry to promote good quality, sustainable seafood. It aims to raise standards and improve efficiency, ensuring that the fishing industry develops in a viable way.

2. The board is made up of representatives from the fishing catching and processing sectors as well a number of independents from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

3. This appointment has been made in accordance with guidance issued by the Office for the Commissioner for Public Appointments (OCPA). All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees political activity (if any declared) to be made public. No such declaration has been made for this appointment.

4. Paul W Kerr worked in the banking sector from 1969 to 2002 building up particular experience within the corporate banking sector. From April 2002 to 2009 he was Chairman of NI Seafood Ltd and was also a member of NI Food Strategy Group.
