Minister hears concerns of potato growers after Morocco import rejection

Monday, 22 March 2010

Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA today met with representatives of the Ulster Potato Association to discuss the recent rejection of a consignment of local seed potatoes in Morocco.

The 1,000 tonnes of seed potatoes produced by eight growers in South Down, have been rejected for importation by Moroccan Government Plant Health Officials. Seed potatoes supplied by Holland, France and Scotland have also been rejected.

At the meeting with local growers, which was also attended by Diane Dodds MEP, the Minister said she fully appreciated the difficulties being experienced.

The Minister said: “The rejection of seed potatoes in Morocco has caused considerable problems for local growers, not alone over this consignment but future production and marketing plans. My understanding is that new consignments of seed potatoes arriving in Morocco are being assessed using new criteria.

“I will be writing directly to the Moroccan authorities explaining the negative impact that this seasons rejection is having on the north of Ireland growers, and their capability to supply this valued market with new varieties in future years.”

Expressing concern at the failure of the Moroccan authorities to make known to importers changes in their regulations, the Minister added: “I am concerned that rules applying to trade with third countries are applied in a transparent manner in keeping with the international protocols that govern this trade, and those normal inspections to protect any country’s plant health status are not influenced by any other trade considerations. The trade and growers must be clear of the requirements of the market.”

The Minister said in an attempt to resolve the issue, department officials have been active on a number of fronts.

She added: “I intend writing to DEFRA Minister Hilary Benn, MP, and to my counterpart in the Scottish government to seek a consensus and common approach from the EU Trade Commissioner to try and resolve this issue. Officials in DG Trade will also be asked to examine the potential for assistance from the EU to reduce the impact of this rejected trade on local growers."
