07 November 2007 - Gildernew meets Wool Marketing Board

Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA has met with a delegation from the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB).

The delegation, led by Committee Chairman James McHenry discussed a wide range of topics including the recent Red Meat Taskforce report, Less Favoured Areas, animal health issues and difficulties in exporting wool to China.

Following the meeting the Minister said: “Today’s meeting has provided me with a good opportunity to discuss progress on a number of current issues with the Wool Marketing Board. The local wool production industry is an important part of our rural economy and I am committed to delivering the best deal for all our agricultural growers.”

At the meeting, the Minister discussed Less Favoured Areas (LFA) with the delegation, confirming that a formal review of support arrangements in LFAs is currently engaging with stakeholders on the issue.

The delegation also raised difficulties it was experiencing in trying to export wool to China. Acknowledging their concerns, the Minister asked for officials to take this forward.
