Minister samples local festive treats at Magherafelt's Christmas Food Market
Monday, 30 November 2009Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA was in festive mood during a visit to Magherafelt’s first Speciality Christmas Food Market at the weekend.
The event in the historical market yard, brought together local food producers and processors as well as buyers and chefs. Together they presented a feast of seasonal goodies including mince pies, mulled wine, cheeses, turkey kebabs and a signature soup and bread dish created especially for the occasion.
Speaking at the event the Minister said: “Magherafelt Christmas Market is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when our local businesses and agri-food stakeholders work together.
“The best locally produced ingredients have been used to create a variety of seasonal treats, all promoting our quality produce and wholesome food. I have no doubt the positive impact of this event will be felt long after the tinsel has come down.”
Chef’s, organised by Food & Drink NI, staged cookery demonstrations using local ingredients to produce seasonal fare for visitors to the event. The Magherafelt Christmas Market was part funded by DARD through the local Regional Food Programme that recently awarded an additional £80,000 to projects across the North involved in the promotion of quality regional food.
