Foot and Mouth Disease - Farmers to remain vigilent for disease

Thursday, 20 September 2007

In light of the continuing Foot and Mouth situation in Great Britain, farmers are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance by regularly inspecting animals for symptoms of disease.

It is good farming practice to maintain strict bio-security measures at all times. Welfare Codes recommend that livestock are inspected at least once a day to check they are in a state of well-being and at intervals sufficient to avoid any suffering. Regular inspection also ensures that any suspicions of disease are reported quickly, helping to prevent any further possible spread.

If a farmer has any concerns about his animals, he should immediately consult his own veterinarian or local Divisional Veterinary Office. The latest updated information is available on the DARD website at: http://www.dardni.gov.uk/index/animal-health/biosecurity-fmd.htm
