01 August 2008 - Sports Minister is bowled over by twenty20 Cricketers

Northern Ireland is for the first time hosting theTwenty20 Cricket Qualifying Tournament in Stormont Estate, from 2nd - 5th August.

Sports Minister, Gregory Campbell is tonight hosting a reception for Twenty20 Cricket Qualifying Tournament at La Mon House Hotel.

“It is my pleasure to host this dinner for the participating teams and officials of the newest and most exciting development in world cricket, Twenty20,” the Minister said.

“Twenty20 cricket has been specifically designed to broaden the appeal of the game. It is fast, thrilling and attractive to a new younger generation of cricket fans who enjoy the drama of a run chase match,” he added.

The four day qualifying tournament involves six teams from Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands, Bermuda, Canada and Kenya who will be the taking part in the Twenty20 International for the first time.

The two finalists and possibly the winner of the third and fourth place play-off will qualify for the second ICC World Twenty20 2009 tournament in England.

The Minister continued: “Our cricketing tradition is a long and proud one. Ireland’s successes in the World Cup, the one day series against India and South Africa last year and winning the ICC Intercontinental Cup against Canada is proof that cricket here has been enjoying a renaissance in recent years.

“Later this year I hope to launch a Sport and Physical Recreation Strategy which will encourage people of all ages, genders, social backgrounds or disabilities to take part in sporting activities like cricket to help them adopt an active lifestyle.”

Concluding Minister Campbell said: “I would like to take the opportunity to wish the teams and all those involved all the best over the next four days of competition. I’m confident Ireland will do us all proud and get to the final again!”
