17 September 2008 - Appointment of Chair to the board of National Museums of NI

The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure has extended the competition seeking an individual for the position of Chair of the Board of National Museums Northern Ireland.

National Museums Northern Ireland includes the Ulster Museum, Armagh Museum, the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum and the Ulster American Folk Park. W5 at the Odyssey is a wholly owned subsidiary of National Museums Northern Ireland.

Commenting on the importance of this position, the Culture Minister Gregory Campbell said: “Northern Ireland’s National Museums make an outstanding contribution to learning, tourism and looking after our important public collections. The National Museums Northern Ireland sites are amongst the most popular visitor attractions attracting record numbers.”

The Minister continued: “This is an exciting time for National Museums with an ongoing major programme of capital development, which includes the £14.7 million refurbishment and upgrade of the Ulster Museum. We need to continue to enhance our museums provision for the 21st century as civic and community spaces and as catalysts for creativity.”

Emphasising the importance of museums the Minister concluded: “Museums are often the top attraction for any visitor to a new country or city. We can be proud that in Northern Ireland we have some of the best museums in the United Kingdom. I want to make sure they continue to provide an exceptional and intuitive experience for local and international visitors.”

  1. The appointment to the position of Chair is for a term of five years. The Chair will receive remuneration of £10,000 a year with a required time commitment of at least 36 days per annum.  
  2. This is an extension of the competition launched in April 2008.
