Minister Campbell said: “We are all very proud of what Northern Ireland’s competitors have achieved in Beijing. We congratulate Maghera cyclist, Wendy Houvenaghel on winning a silver medal in the 3000m individual pursuit final at the Laoshan Velodrome. Wendy’s silver is great accomplishment for Northern Ireland, winning our first Olympic medal in 16 years.
“Athletes like Wendy are an inspiration for all sportsmen and sportswomen of the future. Wendy’s medal is a result of a two year rigorous training regime as a dedicated full time cyclist.”
The Minister added: “Later this year I hope to launch a Sport and Physical Recreation Strategy which will encourage people of all ages, genders, social backgrounds or disabilities to take part in sporting activities. Hopefully Wendy’s achievement will spur on many more to follow in her foot steps, get into sport and possibly compete in London 2012.”
