24 November 2008 - Northern Ireland Hosts Commonwealth Ten Pin Bowling Championships

Sports Minister Gregory Campbell has welcomed the 16 Commonwealth teams to Northern Ireland for the fourth championships of ten pin bowling.

Speaking ahead of the reception at Parliament Buildings tonight, Minister Campbell said: “It is an honour for Northern Ireland to host this Tenpin Bowling Championship and it is the first time that our own team will have played this competition in front of a home crowd.

“International events, such as this help to raise the profile of Northern Ireland and place us on a world stage, for all the right reasons. I would like to offer my best wishes to Karen and Lynda from the Northern Ireland Ladies team and Billy and Kevin who are representing the Northern Ireland men’s team. I hope they have every success in the tournament.”

The minister also offered his best wishes to all the players and coaches involved in the games this week and thanked everyone involved in making the tournament possible, in particular, the Tenpin Bowling Federation for hosting the event.

The minister concluded: “I know that everyone is looking forward to the Championships which started in Dundonald International Ice Bowl today. It is wonderful to see this venue host yet another prestigious international competition following the famous AMF Bowling World Cup in 1996. This promises to be a real fest of tenpin bowling for all those who love the game.”
