14 April 2008 - Poots pays tribute to true champion

Sports Minister Edwin Poots MLA has paid tribute to one of the best known champions of international rugby, Dr Syd Millar CBE, Legion d’Honneur.

At a special reception this evening in Hillsborough Castle to acknowledge Dr Millar’s outstanding contribution to the sport of rugby, the Minister said: “Syd has achieved everything there is to achieve in rugby, as a player, coach, manager and administrator. His achievements are many and include wonderful service both on and off the field over many years.

“Syd’s legacy is chronicled through his leadership of several important initiatives in the development of international rugby. These include the adoption of a strategic plan and bold investment programme which is now advancing the competitiveness of nations such as Argentina, the Pacific islands, USA, Canada and Romania. At the 2007 Rugby World Cup the investment strategy was beginning to bear fruit in what was a truly memorable tournament.

“And in due course we may see rugby back in the Olympics if Syd’s current work in leading a review of the game shows results.

“Syd has been a true champion of the game and a great ambassador for Northern Ireland.”

The Minister concluded: “Can I say on behalf of the entire sporting family of Northern Ireland a big thank you for the contribution that you have made to rugby and to the lives of sports people in Northern Ireland.”
