08 August 2007 - Record breaking exhibition returns to Belfast

The hugely successful 'Out of the Darkness' photographic exhibition which broke visitor all records at Ormeau Baths Gallery in the Spring has returned to Belfast.

The exhibition which was opened today in the Golden Thread Gallery presents images from 63 photographers taken over the past 40 years. The exhibition focuses not only on past images, but also includes images which capture some of Northern Ireland's greatest achievements.

Arts Minister Edwin Poots MLA officially opened the exhibition and said: "One only needs to look at the photographs to be impressed by the skill, courage and professionalism of the Northern Ireland press photographers. Because of their work we have a record of the tragedies and triumphs of the last 40 years which brought both pride and sorrow to people from all communities.

"While the exhibition is a nostalgic journey for local people, the images displayed present a unique insight into social, political and cultural events across the region for visitors to Northern Ireland."

He continued: "After a record breaking first run in March in the Ormeau Baths Gallery which was mirrored by a very successful exhibition in Washington DC as part of the Rediscover Northern Ireland programme, it is wonderful to see Out of the Darkness brought back to Belfast for all to enjoy.

"I would like to acknowledge the hard work of John Harrison, chair of the Northern Ireland Press Photographers Association and his committee in making this exhibition such a success."

John Harrison, NIPPA, said: "The response to this exhibition has been overwhelming with over 6,000 visitors to the previous showing in March, smashing all gallery records. There are thousands of people who still want to see the exhibition and we are thrilled that we are able to respond to the demand. We are hopeful that we will have a permanent home for the exhibition in the future."

The exhibition will run until 19 September and is a partnership between the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Press Photographers Association.
