08 February 2008 - Corporate sponsorship essential for the Arts - Poots

Corporate sponsorship of the arts is helping arts organisations expand their activities and artists develop their talents, Arts Minister, Edwin Poots MLA has said.

The Minister was speaking at the announcement by the Ulster Bank that it is to be the partner and new title sponsor of the Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen’s.

Congratulating the Ulster Bank on its decision to invest £1million in the festival over the next three years the Minister said: “Sponsorship of the festival is a major investment in the artistic and cultural future of Northern Ireland. Belfast Festival at Queen’s is one of the most significant arts festivals in the British Isles and has developed an international reputation for delivering a diverse range of high quality arts activities and performances.

“The Ulster Bank’s move sends out a very clear message to the business community that the arts sector is a good investment. This is not just philanthropy, but also good business that will benefit our community, our economy and our perception around the world.

“Business is waking up to the importance of the arts in the growth of the economy. It’s a two way street; business and the arts can help each other. Queen’s decision is a great example of corporate social responsibility and an opportunity to increase brand recognition.”

The Minister said that there is good evidence that the investment in the Festival is returned to the local economy several times over.

He said: “That means more people spending more money in our restaurants, hotels and shops, with benefits for the business community through the increased trade and the workforce by securing existing jobs and creating new ones.

“Many of those people attracted to Belfast by the Festival are from beyond our shores and these cultural tourists will spend time and money all over Northern Ireland. This is all part of the re-discovery of Northern Ireland and letting the rest of the world know that this is a great place to visit.”

In December 2007 Edwin Poots announced that DCAL is to provide funding of £300,000 over the next three years for Belfast Festival at Queen’s. Funding is also provided by the Arts Council for Northern Ireland and Belfast City Council.
