Responding to the IFA’s recent decision to radically revamp their governance structures the Minister said: “I have always made it clear that release of funds for the Soccer Strategy would be linked to progress in strengthening governance and accountability arrangements in the IFA.
“The decision of the Council on 21st February to move to a more competency based approach was a major step forward which I welcome. A programme of work is being agreed with Sport Northern Ireland to deal with a small number of outstanding issues. I expect this to be brought to a conclusion very soon so that remaining funding for the implementation of the Soccer Strategy can be released.
“I would also anticipate that this funding will enable the IFA’s youth programme to continue and allow a facilities programme to be launched that would help clubs upgrade their venues in accordance with UEFA, new IFA Premier League and Premier Intermediate League requirements over the coming year.”
Notes to Editors:
- Of the up to £8million earmarked for the Soccer Strategy, approximately £3.3million has been released to date. A further sum of around £3.5million has been set aside to assist with the implementation of a facilities development programme.
