Speaking at a reception last night in Hillsborough Castle to mark the 25th Anniversary of the competition the Minister said: “Since it began in 1983, the Milk Cup has grown into one of the most important and successful soccer competitions in the world.
“The competition brings together the cream of young footballing talent from as far away as Brazil and Poland to play alongside household names such as Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. It brings the excitement and challenge of competing to the young players and officials and great entertainment for the spectators.
“It gives Northern Ireland a chance to show to all our visitors the warmth and hospitality for which we are renowned. It also plays an important role in bringing economic benefits to local businesses.
“Many famous names have graced this competition in the past with players such as Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Robbie Fowler and Peter Crouch all competing. Indeed, on that never to be forgotten night Northern Ireland defeated Spain in the European Championship match, all 10 outfield players who started the game had played in the Milk Cup.”
Congratulating Milk Cup Chairman, Victor Leonard, and his team for all their hard work in staging such a prestigious tournament the Minister said: “The competition has gone from strength to strength over the past 25 years and this year will broaden its appeal by staging a four-team women’s international competition for under 19s. I wish everyone involved a very successful and enjoyable competition.”
