The Minister said: “It is obvious that Northern Ireland’s unrivalled passion for road racing and the thrill of the bikes in action continues to attract huge crowds form across the world.
“As a spectator here today I am in awe of the ability, skill and courage of the competitors as they battle it out on the course. Clearly, it is the magnificent achievements of all the riders over its 76 year history that have made this race the biggest event in Northern Ireland’s sporting calendar.
“The international coverage the race receives presents Northern Ireland as a modern, progressive and fun loving region. It is also a wonderful opportunity to offer first class hospitality and entertainment to our guests and to bring huge economic benefits to local hotels, restaurants, bars and businesses.
“Mervyn White, his team and Coleraine and District Motor Club have once again achieved gold standard and deserve huge congratulations for all their hard work in staging such a prestigious event.”
Edwin Poots said that while the North West 200 means speed and excitement the safety of participants and spectators is paramount.
He said: “It is imperative that we never lose track of the importance of safety. I am therefore very pleased that my Department has been able to help with additional funding of £150,000 to upgrade safety on the race circuit. Resurfacing of areas of the course, new approved safety bales and additional security fencing will all help improve safety.”
The event has grown quite considerably over the years and is now much more than just a race. During the build-up to today’s climax the organisers have widened the appeal by including a Charity Walk, Family Motor Fest, fireworks display and concerts.
“Today has seen the culmination of long months of planning. Now there is something for everyone to enjoy and I am already looking forward with anticipation to next year,” the Minister added.
