The findings are taken from a DCAL Research and Statistical Bulletin published today and highlight the interest in the archives held by the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) and the ways in which the public would like to access its extensive collections.
The results also highlighted the public’s requirement for easy access to the archives with 65% emphasising ease of parking and 35% citing good transport networks as a factor when considering a possible relocation within the Belfast area.
Gerry Slater, Head of PRONI said: “These results are very interesting and come at an opportune time in the history of the organisation. In August this year, DCAL committed £30million to the relocation of PRONI Headquarters to the Titanic Quarter. The project to relocate the Public Record Office is very exciting and significant and shows the Government’s commitment to acknowledging the importance and inherent value of the unique cultural assets which PRONI holds.
“The new state of the art facilities will greatly enhance public access, with the new building being prominently located within easy reach of many transport routes.
“The Omnibus survey also showed that people would like to be able to access some archive materials online. PRONI is making moves to launch a new website before the end of the year and there will be some exciting new features the public can make use of.”
