Sports Minister offers best wishes to special olympics athletes
Tuesday, 2 October 2007Sports Minister Edwin Poots, MLA has sent his best wishes to the Northern Ireland athletes taking part in the 2007 Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai.
Speaking today, Minister Poots said: “Participation in the largest ever Special Olympics in Shanghai is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the competitors. It not only raises the spirits of those involved, but also helps to create a feeling of real achievement across the region.
“Seventeen young athletes from across Northern Ireland have earned their place in this world event which will build cultural bridges and acceptance for people with learning disabilities. We need to enhance this further and seek to facilitate the development of all who wish to compete in sport. I will shortly be making an announcement about the draft Sports Strategy for Northern Ireland, which will contribute to shaping the future of sport here and aid in the continuing success for our sportsmen and women.”
The games will be the largest sporting event in the world this year, with delegations from more than 160 countries participating, representing every corner of the globe. 7,500 athletes will compete in an atmosphere of acceptance and dignity in 25 sports, showing the world the limitless potential of people with a disability.
The Minister concluded: “My sincere best wishes for every success go to the athletes. I look forward to hearing about your achievements and hope that your Shanghai experience is all you imagined.”
