Touring the fishery the minister said: “This visit has provided an opportunity to learn about the Lough Neagh Fishermen's Co-operative Society and to experience at first hand the workings of the fishery here in Toome.
“The fishery is important to the local economy and the co-operative also makes a valuable contribution to scientific research by working closely with my department to gather data on eel stocks. I welcome continuing efforts by DCAL and the co-operative to secure the future of the fishery on a sustainable basis.”
The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure is currently preparing Eel Management Plans as required by the EU Eel Regulation 1100/2007. These plans outline the measures Northern Ireland intends to take to help conserve the declining European eel stock.
Notes to Editors:
- The Lough Neagh Fishermen's Co-operative is the largest wild commercial fishery in Europe.
- The eel fishery supports over 90 boats, each with a crew of 2 men. Some 300 families derive and depend on income from the fishery.
- The co-operative also plays an important part in the conservation of eels in the Neagh Bann river basin and DCAL works closely with the co-operative in collating scientific data to inform management recommendations and ensure sustainability.
