Join a Library for free leisure time activity

Thursday, 23 October 2008

Culture and Arts Minister Gregory Campbell MP MLA is urging people looking for a new and free pastime to join their local library.

The minister said: “Entertaining the family in the current economic climate need not cost the earth so why not get down to your local library and find out what’s on offer there.

“There are over three and a half million books in Northern Ireland’s libraries which can be borrowed free. Internet access is also free and many libraries host activity programmes geared towards all age groups.

“If you haven’t paid a visit to a library for many years you will be surprised to discover that they have changed almost out of all recognition, from dusty old buildings to modern spacious facilities, packed with books and computers and music. There is plenty to keep people entertained - mostly without having to put your hand in your pocket.”

The minister made his comments on a visit to Bangor Carnegie Library this afternoon where he was given a preview of an extensive £3million refurbishment programme as it nears completion.

The library will open to the public next month and will provide enormously improved services to the people of the Bangor area. The new building is almost seven times larger than the original and contains a performance/ exhibition space, café, computer centre as well as a much larger stock of books and music for adults and children.

The minister continued: “There were nearly seven million visits to libraries last year and many libraries are continuing to get busier as people rediscover the enjoyment of reading and the other leisure time activities available.

“Bangor is the latest in a series of new and improved libraries in Northern Ireland today. I am confident that the people of the area will pour through the doors of this modern and vibrant facility when it opens to the public next month.”

Notes to Editors:

The Executive has been investing in the improvement of the library service in Northern Ireland. £31million has been earmarked for investment in library buildings in the next three years (2008-11) and £107million over the following seven years. This follows the building programme which has seen many new or improved libraries, including Strabane, Ballymena, Grove, Finaghy, Lisburn, Cookstown and Armagh.

When the Northern Ireland Library Authority is launched next year it will be responsible for public library services and developing facilities for the future.
