McCausland launches Antrim Word project
Thursday, 8 October 2009Culture Minister Nelson McCausland visited Mosside in North Antrim today for the launch of the Mosside Word project.
A regeneration project focused on environmental improvements and the promotion of the local culture, the Word project has three separate strands:
· paving slabs in the footpaths have been inscribed with local words to make a word trail;
· a feature sign has been put up at the entrance to Rockfield Park; and
· a schools pack with puzzles, a card game and stories using local and English words has been developed to keep the Ulster-Scots language alive for future generations.
Speaking at the launch event the Minister said: “This Mosside Word project was developed with the aim of showcasing and promoting the Ulster-Scots language.
“I believe it will help to engender pride in the language as a valuable part of our cultural heritage and that it will help to keep it alive and in everyday use.
“It will also help to increase and develop tourist interest which will boost the economy of the area.”
He concluded by saying: “Mosside Development Group should be proud of the progress made to date – I heartily congratulate everyone involved in the project.”
