Students encouraged to "be inspired" ahead of 2012 Olympics
Saturday, 24 October 2009Culture and sports Minister Nelson McCausland today hosted a student engagement event aimed at inspiring students to 'get involved' in preparations for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games.
The Minister was joined at the event in Belfast by Sir Steve Redgrave, British Rower and five times Olympic gold medallist and by members of the
2012 leadership group to give students the opportunity to take part in a Q&A session.

Speaking at the event, the Minister said: ³Having the Olympic and Paralympic Games taking place so close to our shores provides a unique opportunity for everyone in Northern Ireland to feel part of it.
³As Minister for DCAL, I have responsibility for Northern Ireland's legacy from the 2012 Games. Whilst sport is at the heart of the games, 2012 is much broader than just sport and the legacy benefits are much more far reaching.²
Sir Steve Redgrave said: ³I am delighted to be here in Northern Ireland to take part of this exciting journey to 2012 and hope that the students today will leave feeling inspired to take the next step towards achieving their goals and dreams.²
The Minister concluded by encouraging all young people to consider using this once in a lifetime opportunity to try something new and encouraged greater involvement and participation in their chosen field.
