06 September 2007 - Sport Northern Ireland chair and vice - chair appointments

The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure is currently seeking enthusiastic and dynamic individuals for the positions of Chair and Vice-Chair of Sport Northern Ireland, the body responsible for the development of sport in Northern Ireland.

Commenting on the importance of these positions the Minister responsible for sport, Edwin Poots MLA, said “Sport and physical recreation is something which a growing number of people throughout Northern Ireland seek to build into their every day lives. Apart from the pure enjoyment of participation and the obvious physical benefits of regular exercise, people of all ages and at all levels can gain a real sense of achievement and well-being through a diverse range of activities. However, more needs to be done to ensure that people are fully supported in achieving their goals and potential.”

He highlighted the opportunities for the further development of sport in Northern Ireland, which includes the lead up to and beyond the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 and the programme of major investment in elite facilities.

Stressing the need for a coordinated approach the Minister went on to say: “Sport Northern Ireland will be pivotal to realising such opportunities and meeting the objectives which will be outlined in the new Strategy for Sport, due to be launched next year.”

He added: “It is vital that the Chair and Vice-Chair of Sport Northern Ireland can bring clear vision and strategic leadership to sport whilst meeting the highest standard of governance. With the other members of the Board, they will work with governing bodies and other key organisations and interests to achieve shared objectives and provide sport and recreational opportunities for all. These are important positions and we would be delighted to hear from anyone who wants to be part of shaping the future of sport in Northern Ireland.”

The closing date for applications for these positions is 5:00pm, Friday 28 September 2007.
