That was the message from Arts Minister, Edwin Poots, MLA, as he attended the Donaghadee Male Voice Choir’s 75th Anniversary Celebration yesterday.
The Minister said: “I am particularly pleased to celebrate the anniversary of one of Northern Ireland’s best known and most successful choirs.
“The impact that arts organisations such as male voice choirs, has on our communities should never be underestimated. They play a vital role in promoting health and community cohesion and must be encouraged as far as possible.”
The Minister continued: “Arts organisations such as this have had tremendous success in promoting Northern Ireland across the world. Festivals such as the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington this summer, showcase Northern Ireland’s arts and talents on an international stage and present a positive image of our region.
“At a time when the membership of other choirs is dwindling, Donaghadee Male Voice Choir is flourishing and going from strength to strength and I am greatly encouraged by the commitment and enthusiasm from each and every one of you.”
Donaghadee Male Voice Choir was formed in 1932 and membership currently stands at 70. The choir has had over forty ‘firsts’ in music festivals in the UK and Ireland since its formation. While on tour in 1995, the choir was made an ‘Honorary Georgia Citizen’ in recognition of “its outstanding contribution in the field of music”.
