The Minister was speaking during a visit to an Open Day at Chumann Óige Cholann in Poleglass. Minister Ruane said; Chumman Óige Cholann gives young people the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of youth club activities through the Irish language. Young people can gain positive educational and social benefits through participating in youth clubs.
In recent years we have seen an increase in the number of youth clubs operating through the medium of Irish, which helps to enhance the young peoples understanding of their cultural heritage and identity. I would pay tribute to the youth leaders in all areas who give their time to help our young people enjoy out of school activities through our native language.”
Chumann Óige Cholann was opened in October 2009 and has around 60 members. The club meets two nights each week at Colin Youth Development Centre, Good Shepherd Road, Poleglass. A range of activities are available, including traditional music, hip hop dancing, outdoor education, sports and social activities. It also offers out of centre activities.
