21 November 2008 - Learning for life and work vital for our future

Will Haire, Permanent Secretary at the Department of Education, outlined his vision for helping young people to prepare for the world of work.

The Permanent Secretary was speaking at the annual conference of the Northern Ireland Schools and Colleges Career Association, held in Templepatrick.

Addressing delegates from across the education sector, Will Haire said: “From September last year we began introducing the revised curriculum into our schools. This new dynamic curriculum includes a deliberate focus in Post-Primary Key Stages 3 and 4 on Learning for Life and Work. This is to help our young people to develop the skills and attitudes to succeed in their chosen career paths.

“A key concept of Learning for Life and Work is career management and career planning. Careers advisors are central to motivating and helping our young people to make key decisions and choose the skills they need for the future. In our classrooms today sit the entrepreneurs, the engineers, the builders and teachers of tomorrow. It is vital that we provide them with the information, guidance and confidence to unlock their skills and reach their full potential.

“The Department of Education and the Department of Employment and Learning recognise the importance of providing coherent and cohesive advice to young people on future employment and career pathways. Both DE and DEL have been working closely in developing a joint Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance Strategy. This strategy aims to help our young people make effective career decisions, leading to increased participation in education, training and employment.”
