The conference entitled ‘School Psychology: Making life better for the child’ opened on Tuesday 20 July, in Dublin Castle. Delegates from over 40 countries were joined by Education Ministers from both north and south, Caitríona Ruane and Mary Coughlan TD.
Speaking after the reception at Stormont, Minister Ruane said: "Psychologists and psychological research have a part to play in all aspects of society. The role played in our schools has become more high profile with parents and teachers more aware of the benefits to be gained. School psychologists are experts in both psychology and education. They help to address the educational, emotional, social, and behavioural challenges that many children and young people experience.
"This is the first time the ISPA conference has been held in Ireland. I welcome delegates from both near and far. International conferences such as these are invaluable in enabling global best practice to be shared, common challenges addressed and solutions found.
“It is through the collaboration of teachers, parents, and other professionals we are able to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments, strengthening the connections between home, school, and the community. The work being done by school psychologists help some of our most vulnerable children to feel included and engage in school life. It is through this support they are able to work towards fulfilling their potential, breaking the cycle of underachievement and making a positive contribution to wider society and their communities."
