Statement from Education Minister on Swine Flu

Thursday, 22 October 2009

Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane said; "I met with the Health Minister today and spoke with him earlier in the week to seek reassurance that pupils with complex health issues are placed at the top of the priority list and I am encouraged that vaccination of these groups started today.

"My officials met this morning with representatives from the Public Health Agency, the education sector and teacher unions. This was the third in a series of meetings to plan how schools should deal with swine flu and discuss the ever-changing situation. We are in constant contact with the Department of Health and the PHA at all levels and will continue to advise Principals and parents based on the medical advice we receive from health professionals.

"This is a worrying time for Principals and parents, but we are taking all the necessary precautions to ensure our schools remain open and pupils continue with their education."
