23 October 2008 - Appointment of a Member to the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland

The Department of Education today announced the appointment of Jennifer Cornyn to the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland. The term of the appointment will expire on 14 October 2010.

Dr Jennifer Cornyn replaces Mr Patrick Kinney who resigned from the Council during his second term of appointment.

Dr Cornyn recently retired from her position as the Head of the School of Caring Services at Fermanagh College. She has been a member of the Western Education and Library Board since 2000 and in January 2005 she was also appointed to the position of Lay Magistrate.

This appointment has been made in accordance with the OCPA NI Code of Practice.

  1. The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland is an independent self-regulatory professional body established under the Education (Northern Ireland) Order 1998. The Council advises the Department and employing authorities on a wide range of issues, including the training, career development and performance management of teachers; standards of teaching and standards of conduct for teachers.
  2. The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland comprises 33 members: 14 teachers elected by their peers; five teachers appointed by the Northern Ireland Teachers’ Council; 10 appointments made by various representative bodies with a stake-hold in education and the four appointments made by the Department of Education.
  3. This appointment was made in accordance with the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland’s Code of Practice. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for the political activity of appointees (if declared) to be published.
  4. The council member listed does not receive annual remuneration in respect of their appointment although travel and subsistence allowance and financial loss allowances are awarded.
