24 October 2008 - Ruane - Impressed by Commitment and Dedication of Integrated Sector

Education Minister Caitríona Ruane was at the official opening of Blackwater Integrated College, a new post-primary school in Downpatrick.

Speaking at the event the Minister said: “I would like to congratulate everyone at Blackwater Integrated College for their hard work and dedication. The new school is the result of the amalgamation of the former Down Academy and Rowallane Integrated College. Integrated schools along with those in the Irish Medium sector have seen a growing demand for places against a background of falling rolls in other sectors.

“I take seriously my statutory duty as Education Minister to encourage and facilitate the development of integrated education. I have had the pleasure of visiting a number of integrated schools since becoming minister and during all those visits, I have always been impressed by the commitment of both teaching and non-teaching staff to the education and development of children in their care. I also welcome the openness of the sector in its approach to seeking collaborative opportunities with schools in other sectors. Integrated education has an important contribution to make in the establishment of a stable and peaceful future for our all children.

“I would like to thank Doctor Griffiths and the Board of Governors for their invitation to perform the official opening and I wish everyone good luck in their new school.”
