22 April 2008 - Local accountability is best - Education Minister

Education Minister Caitríona Ruane has told members of the South Eastern Education and Library Board that her preference is for them to resume their responsibilities.

The minister has now met groups of elected and non-elected members and is now considering whether the Board can be reconstituted and, if so, how soon. The minister said: "It is very important that the board runs effectively and delivers high quality education for all our children and young people. I stressed to all members the importance of them adhering to their statutory responsibilities while maintaining a harmonious working relationship. It is important to have a culture of respect and also have due regard to the principles of equality in all aspects of our work.

"This is a time of great change in education as we prepare for the establishment of the Education and Skills Authority and work to implement a range of progressive reforms. Locally elected representatives and other members of the community have an important role in this full process and it is my aim that we can all work together to deliver an education system that is fit for the 21st century."
