Ruane - Staff are one of a school's biggest assets

Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has given the opening address at the ‘Improving Performance through Staff Development’ conference in Derry.

Speaking at the event in St Mary’s College, the Minister said: “A school’s staff is one of their biggest assets, they are central to ensuring children receive the high quality education they deserve and enjoy their time at school.

“As I am sure you are aware there is much to be proud of in our education system however there is still work to be done. Far too many children still leave school without sufficient literacy and numeracy skills. It is the teaching practitioners who are fundamental to raising standards and closing the gap between our highest and lowest achieving pupils.

“A strong and motivated teaching and school staff are essential for continuous development and improvement; they are the building blocks on which successful schools are built. In turn successful schools lead to confident articulate young people who are able to fulfil their potential and make the most of life’s opportunities.

“I congratulate all of the schools who are taking part in the conference and sharing their invaluable experience in areas such as managing change and developing partnerships. I applaud St Mary’s on their commendation by Investors in People for their focus on staff development and models of continuous improvement.”
