The school, near Caledon, had only 24 children enrolled in the 2006/07 school year.
Commenting on the move, the Minister said that the decision was in the best interests of the pupils and said: “I recognise the importance of small rural schools and do not take the decision to close a school lightly, particularly one that has served its local community for over a century as Minterburn Primary School has.
“Nevertheless, I believe that this decision is in the best interests of the school’s pupils and that they will be able to avail of a wider educational experience at one of the neighbouring schools in the area.”
The Minister praised those associated with the school and said: “I would like to pay tribute to the Principal, teachers, Board of Governors, parents and children of Minterburn Primary School. I realise that everyone associated with the school has worked hard to provide an excellent education for the pupils over the years.
“I want to assure all those affected that the Department of Education, through the Southern Education and Library Board, will work with parents and neighbouring schools to ensure the transition is made as easy as possible for the children concerned.”
