Based within Primate Dixon Primary School, Coalisland, the unit will complement existing provision in the area and enable children with autism to participate in mainstream schooling.
The Education Minister said “Since taking office one of my biggest priorities has been to ensure a quality service for children with special needs.
“I want to congratulate all those involved with the support unit here at Primate Dixon. Centres such as these offer a supportive and enjoyable learning environment, enabling some of our most vulnerable children to access the education they deserve.”
The Minister added “The Building a Better Future Draft Budget for 2008 to 2011 gives a commitment to take forward the current review of Special Education Needs and meet the growing requirement in this area for improved, more consistent provision which makes the most effective use of resources available.
“Primate Dixon must also be congratulated on their work with children from the travelling community and those who speak English as an addtional language.
"I have found that the schools ethos is one of inclusion where diversity is celebrated and I would encourage everyone to continue their excellent work."
