Commenting on the decision the Minister said: “It is never an easy decision to agree the closure of any school. The school has operated on this site since 1831 and has served the local community in Lisburn for many years. However, declines in enrolments had led to concerns about the continued sustainability of the school and earlier this year the South Eastern Education and Library Board had initiated discussions with parents and teachers on the future of the school.
“Parents decided to opt for alternative schools in September and there are now no pupils at the school. The educational interests of the children formerly attending the school are being met in the neighbouring schools in the area. I would like to pay tribute to all those at Hilden Primary School who over the years showed their commitment and dedication to the school.”
Notes to Editors:
- The South Eastern Education and Library Board (SEELB) published Development Proposal No 179 on 16 September 2008, proposing closure of Hilden Integrated Primary School (IPS) with effect from 30 November 2008, or as soon as possible thereafter.
- Hilden IPS is situated in east Lisburn beside the river Lagan. The school has a capacity for 126 pupils and an approved admission number of 18.
- Enrolments had fallen consistently over the last five years and only 36 pupils attended the school in 2007/08 – there were no Year 1 pupils attending the school in either 2006/07or 2007/08. Only one pupil enrolled for 2008/09 and that pupil has since relocated to another local primary school.
