Community-based Projects inspire us all – Ruane

Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has paid tribute to community-based programmes that can inspire and empower young people.

The Minister was speaking at Forthspring Inter-Community Group, Belfast, where she was presenting certificates to young people who have completed youth projects. The Minister said: “Community-based projects, such as Forthspring, have the potential to make major contributions to their communities through giving local people the power to make real changes that can affect many lives.

“I know through my own experiences working in local communities how important these initiatives are and I would pay tribute to all involved. To make Forthspring a success takes commitment from the staff, volunteers, supporters and parents, but most of all the young people themselves. Tonight is about recognising that commitment.

“The Young Leaders Programme will help to develop community leaders for tomorrow, while the Health and Well-Being Project gives others the opportunity to examine essential issues around health and self esteem and raise awareness of issues such as suicide.

“I am pleased that my Department is able to provide support for Forthspring and it is valuable for me to come along and see the results of that support. I wish all involved in Forthspring well for the future.”
