Education Minister meets Antrim parents

Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has outlined her planned changes in education at a public meeting in Antrim.

Speaking after the meeting the Minister said: “This was a very good opportunity to hear directly from parents and teachers their views on education in the north of Ireland. Reform of our education system is long overdue and the vast majority of people at the meeting supported the changes I am proposing.

“Together, we can build an education system that produces children who are creative, articulate and equipped to meet the challenges of modern society. Across education I have a number of progressive reforms to support teachers and schools to ensure all children are able to reach their full potential.

“I have issued, for consultation, guidance to schools for Transfer 2010. If schools follow this guidance then no child needs to be subjected to selection to admit them to a school that best meets their needs and abilities. It is time some of those in education moved on and recognise we must do better for all children, not just a select minority.”
