Minister announces closure of Armagh Integrated College

Wednesday, 25 February 2009

Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has approved a Development Proposal to allow for the closure of Armagh Integrated College.

The Minister said: “Armagh Integrated College opened in September 2004 following a campaign by local parents to secure a post-primary integrated school for the Armagh City area. However, the school has struggled with the challenge of sustaining pupil numbers in a region affected by a downturn in the school-going population.

“The Board of Governors brought forward the proposal that the school should close. This was not an easy thing to do and I commend them for taking this course of action which I fully support. I would also pay tribute to the teachers for the contribution made since the school opened. Only 60 pupils currently attend Armagh Integrated College and I am confident that the closure of the school and their transfer to other schools is in their best educational interests. The Department will work with all involved to ensure as smooth a transition as possible.”
