06 June 2007 - Investing in people benefits everyone - Ruane

Education Minister Caitríona Ruane unveiled a plaque congratulating Immaculate Conception College on their success in achieving the Investors in People Standard (IIP).

The Investors in People Standard is a business improvement tool that assists organisations to compete and succeed through improved people performance.

Speaking during the unveiling, Minister Ruane said: “Investors in People is about encouraging employers to improve the performance of their staff, and hence their organisation.

“It is recognition, as the name suggests that the school values its staff and this makes it a special place for children to learn. If a school values the staff, both teaching and non teaching, the benefits and attitude will be transferred to the pupils.

“My vision is that every school can be a good school and awards such as the IIP will help this come to fruition.

“This award recognises the improvements made in the school’s performance in recent years and is one of approximately 80 schools to have been awarded the IIP standard.”

This was the first of two visits to the North West today. The Education Minister also visited Limavady High School to listen to pupils and teachers. She said: “I am keen to listen to as many educationalists and education stakeholders as possible in the coming weeks and months and I aim to meet with as many as possible.”

NOTES TO EDITORS:

80 Schools have been awarded IIP status since 1994 when IIP began.

Organisations are assessed on four key messages about the IIP standard

1. Plan, Do and Review

2. Stronger emphasis on working culture, including encouraging employers to enhance employee involvement in decision making processes.

3. Stronger emphasis on the role of managers as leaders in the work place.

4. A detailed Profile assessment against the criteria of the IIP standard to help improve the organisations performance.
