19 June 2008 - New learning support classes for Lisneal College and Lisnagelvin Primary School

Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has approved Development Proposals to establish new Learning Support Classes in Derry.

The new Classes will be for children at Key Stages 3 and 4 at Lisneal College and for children at Key Stages 1 and 2 at Lisnagelvin Primary School. The classes are part of the Western Education and Library Board’s strategy to provide a continuum of special needs provision, ranging from special schools to mainstream education with additional support.

Commenting on the decision, Ms Ruane said: “The new units will enable children to access small group teaching and periods of individualised support. They will also benefit from social and curricular integration with their mainstream peers, as part of a planned framework of intervention. The classes will complement existing special needs provision in the Western Board area and increase choice for parents when considering the provision they feel is best suited to their child’s needs.”
