17 June 2009 - Early years are essential years - Ruane

Education Minister Caitríona Ruane welcomed the World Forum on Early Care and Education to Belfast today.

The World Forum, takes place every two years. Childhood professionals from over 80 countries gather to share ideas on a wide range of issues that impact on the delivery of services for children and families.

Speaking after addressing the meeting, the Minister said: “It is great for Belfast and the north of Ireland to host this prestigious gathering of delegates, all of whom share a respect for the importance and the value of an early years' education.

“When talking to the delegates, I heard at first hand the problems they have in their countries on equality issues in education. In my Department, we recognise the importance of early years in the development of children.

“The early years are essential for a child’s intellectual, emotional, social, physical and moral development. During these early years, children’s development advances at a pace greater than at any other stage in life and both physical and environmental factors play a significant role in this development.

“My department is leading on an Early Years Strategy which will address many issues raised by the sector in its delivery of high quality services. It will create a framework through which it will have the profile it has sadly lacked in recent years, identifying challenges, aims and long-term strategic actions for future developments and improvements.”
