17 June 2009 - Education Minister Caitríona Ruane condemns racist attacks

Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has condemned the attacks which have led to a number of Romanian families leaving their Belfast homes.

Speaking after a visit to the families at the Ozone Leisure Centre, Ormeau Embankment the Minister said:

"I am utterly appalled at the shameful events which led to over 100 people in south Belfast becoming homeless. I have visited those affected and tried to reassure them that the majority of people in the north of Ireland are disgusted by the behaviour of the minority. Racism in all its forms is totally unacceptable.

“My priority is for the educational welfare of the children involved and I will do all I can to reduce any adverse impact on the children and their families. Children from other countries have added to the rich diversity of cultures and languages spoken in our schools and we should welcome them into our communities.

“My Department has a number of initiatives designed to make the transition of newcomer children into our communities as easy as possible. The recent spate of attacks has done much damage to the good work which has already been done but we will recover and let these families know they are welcome here. It is important for all government agencies to work together to support the families and my Department will be fully involved in this."
