Ms Ruane commented: “For over 70 years, Newtownbreda has provided a valuable service to the community in this area of Belfast. Unfortunately, with only 59 pupils remaining in the school, numbers have declined to the point where this school is no longer viable. I have always made it clear that I do not take lightly a decision to close any school but in this instance, I believe that my decision is clearly in the best educational interests of the children concerned. There are a number of suitable alternative schools in the area where children will be able to avail of the full curriculum opportunities and to enjoy a better level of peer and social interaction.
“I would like to pay tribute to all those connected with Newtownbreda Primary School who over many years showed their commitment and dedication to the school and its pupils.”
