Special Educational Provision must meet children's needs - Ruane
Friday, 27 March 2009Education Minister Caitríona Ruane has said that Article 24 (Education) of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities should be signed without the need for interpretative declarations or a reservation.
The Minister said: “We need to provide education to children with special needs that is individual to them and will help them get the best from their school years.
“The Convention should be signed without reservations or interpretative declarations.
“We have been reviewing the provision of education for children with special needs and recognise that we must provide a continuum of special educational provision to meet a diversity of need.
“It is important that children with special educational needs or disabilities can be educated together with other children and they all have the access to the same range of educational opportunities.”
