Education Minister updates Committee on Transfer 2010
Tuesday, 10 March 2009Education Minister Caitríona Ruane has updated the Education Committee on her proposals for Transfer 2010.
Speaking after the meeting the Minister said; "Academic selection is unjust and fundamentally wrong. We need an education system which is child centered and which meets the needs of our modern world. I am anxious to see change which delivers for all our children and allows each of them to develop their individual strengths and talents.
"On two occasions I have attempted to have my compromise proposals discussed by the Executive, but this did not happen. These proposals reflected my opposition to academic selection, but they also acknowledged the views of educationalists, with whom they were developed.
"The proposals also acknowledged the views of pro-selective colleagues in government. They proposed three more years of academic selection, on a declining basis, supported by a test developed by CCEA.
"I have now issued guidelines to schools for Transfer 2010.
"The commission to CCEA to develop a test has also been cancelled. In the absence of political agreement it would not be appropriate to make available a state sponsored test.
"I am determined to put equality at the core of our education system and give every child a fair chance."
