Education Minister cuts first sod at Bunscoil Bheanna Boirche
Tuesday, 9 March 2010Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has cut the first sod on the site of a new school building for Bunscoil Bheanna Boirche in Castlewellan.
The first phase of the new building which can accommodate up to 85 pupils is due to be completed by September.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister said: “I am pleased to be invited here to mark a new chapter in Irish-medium education in Castlewellan. The Irish language is an integral component of our rich and shared heritage, and I take great pride in witnessing and being part of a sector that continues to grow educationally, socially and economically.
“The benefits of learning another language are well documented, and I am confident that Bunscoil Bheanna Boirche will continue to play a key role in the promotion of the Irish language in the mid-Down area.
“I would also like to pay tribute to the school principal, Ms Aedin Geary, the staff, the Board of Governors, Iontaobhas na Gaelscolaíochta, Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta and of course the parents and pupils, who have worked tirelessly to ensure that this new building became a reality. The children will soon have the accommodation they deserve and I wish everyone associated with the school, happiness and success in the years ahead.”
