Ruane opens new Irish-medium nursery unit in Derry
Tuesday, 23 March 2010Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, today opened a new Irish-medium nursery unit at Gaelscoil Éadain Mhóir in Derry.
The nursery, which consists of a double modular unit and a decked outside area, caters for 26 children full-time and will act as a feeder for the primary school.
Speaking as she performed the official opening, Caitríona Ruane said: "I am pleased to open this impressive new nursery unit at Gaelscoil Éadain Mhóir.
"Gaelscoil Éadain Mhóir has delivered high quality education through the medium of Irish since its establishment in 1998. It has steadily grown and, having clearly demonstrated its long-term viability, the addition of a nursery unit marks a natural progression.
"The school is now well equipped to deliver the curriculum and meet the needs of pupils in this area of Derry for many years to come."
The Minister added: "There is a demonstrable need for an Irish-medium nursery unit here which further underlines the demand that exists within the local community for children to be educated whilst totally immersed in our native language.
"I congratulate the board of governors, staff, parents and pupils of Gaelscoil Éadain Mhóir on their hard work and commitment to Irish-medium education and wish them every success for the future."
