09 May 2007 - Ruane highlights education priorities

Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has underlined her commitment to providing equality of opportunity for all children in the education system.

The Minister was speaking as she undertook her first series of engagements, to schools in Counties Antrim and Derry.

Speaking during a visit to St Pius X College, Magherafelt, she spoke about the challenges ahead and said: “Over the past number of weeks I have had the opportunity to meet with many in the education community and to listen to their hopes for the future.

“Our education system needs to create confident, creative and articulate children; children who will be able to fully avail of the opportunities today’s global economy provides them. I also believe that we need to make these opportunities available for all; not just the academically gifted.

“Over the coming months we will need to address major issues such as academic selection, dealing with the growing problem of empty desks and the equality agenda.

“My priority in every instance will be to put the welfare of children first.

“I know that the performance of our high-achieving children compares very well against other countries and I am committed to building on that history of academic excellence. However, I also want to ensure that all children, regardless of academic ability or background, have the opportunity to fulfil their individual potential.”

During her tour, the Minister chatted with teachers before meeting construction students in the school’s technology block. The visit formed part of a programme that saw her meet staff and students at Belfast Royal Academy, Riverside Special School in Antrim and Hazelwood Integrated Primary school in North Belfast.

Speaking after her tour, the Minister said: “I am pleased to have had this opportunity to see the excellent work taking place in our schools.

“I recognise that teachers play a vital role in the development of our young people and I have seen many examples of how the commitment of our teachers is opening up a world of opportunities for their pupils.

“As Education Minister, I want to work with teachers and other education stakeholders, listening to their hopes and aspirations and acting on their concerns.

“I believe that in partnership, we can deliver a bright future for all our children – not just the lucky few. In the words of an Irish proverb, Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí (Praise youth and it will flourish).”
