Ms Ruane was speaking as she officially opened an extension to the centre, which now boasts new conference facilities, increased bed capacity and an ‘Activity Arena’ which provides facilities for archery, indoor climbing and ‘wet weather’ activities in a safe and secure environment.
The extension was jointly funded by the Department of Education and the Big Lottery Fund.
Meeting staff and young people at the opening, Caitríona Ruane said: “One of my key aims as Education Minister is to ensure that all children have the opportunity to reach their full potential as valued citizens. Regrettably some children leave the education system without the skills or qualifications they will need for the future.
“Ardnabannon provides an activity-based approach to learning that can engage children and young people outside of the school setting. We need to equip young people with the skills and abilities that will prepare them for life and work. Non-formal education has an essential role in developing teamwork and leadership skills, as well as enabling young people to respect diversity and gain an understanding of their environment.
“The investment in these facilities will provide a safe and fit for purpose centre which young people will enjoy. Staff at the centre played a key role in securing the additional investment and the centre can continue to provide excellent learning opportunities outside of the classroom.”
Ardnabannon has made a significant contribution to the development of educational links and North/ South developments with both the Co.Cork and Co.Clare Vocational Education Committees.
The Department of Education provided over £580,000 towards conference facilities and other refurbishments with the Big Lottery Fund’s PE and Sport programme contributing over £246,000 to the new Activity Arena.
Breidge Gadd, the Big Lottery Fund’s NI Chair, said: “I am delighted to be able to join staff and young people at Ardnabannon Outdoor Education Centre to launch this superb facility. I am sure that pupils, youth groups and the local community will enjoy the benefits of it. The National Lottery grant shows how investing money in sports facilities available both to schools and local people can transform the quality of life in communities.
“The PE and Sport programme is already having a major impact on tackling disadvantage and bringing positive changes to people of all ages across Northern Ireland. The new facilities at Ardnabannon Outdoor Education Centre are the next step in bringing greater access to physical activity to many more people.”
