The sod cutting marks the start of building work to create a new Technology & Design Block at the school.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister highlighted the importance she attached to providing first-class Technology & Design accommodation and said: “Technology & Design is increasingly important in today’s global economy and our future economic success will depend on developing the skills and talents of our young people in this important area of the curriculum.
“This building work is funded from the Specialist Accommodation Programme, which is designed to address deficiencies in Science, Technology & Design and ICT accommodation in our schools. I am committed to working to provide all of our children with the opportunity to learn in modern, fit for purpose accommodation; accommodation that can help us prepare our young people for the challenges ahead.
“When the work is completed, it will provide the students of Edmund Rice College with the enhanced learning opportunities they so richly deserve.”
Following completion of the new block, the school’s existing Technology accommodation will be refurbished, at a cost of £400,000, to provide Home Economics accommodation for the school.
